In the classic film Back to the Future Part II (1989), Marty Mcfly purchases an almanac of sports statistics from 1950-2000 with the hope of bringing it back in time with him to use at winning bets. Were that film produced today, he no doubt would have downloaded Baseball Statistics 2009 Edition to his iPhone.![]()
Complete major league stats for years 1871 to 2008 are included in this 26.1 MB app, so no wifi or data connection is needed (good for basement sports bars). While any baseball fan will enjoy browsing to their favorite team, or searching for their favorite player; this app is really for the folks who enjoy the back of the baseball card more than the front. Yearly and Career batting, pitching, fielding, and personal stats are available for each player, and every team.
The app’s developer (whom I know personally: full disclosure) suggests it would be useful for, “resolving arguments.” However, a few well placed bets at the bar would easily cover the $1.99 “season opener” special price. You might not make a fortune like Marty McFly hoped to do, but how many apps can put a few bucks back in your pocket?
Conclusion: Baseball fans are a passionate sort. I showed this app to several, who were immediately impressed. Baseball Statistics 2009 Edition does one thing; makes it quick and easy to navigate an immense amount of data, and does it very well. I can’t fault the app for being so focused, although I see a lot of opportunity to add value by incorporating even more web data. The links to player entries on Wikipedia are nice, but what if current seasons stats could be updated online?
I give Baseball Statistics 2009 Edition 5 out of 5 beers you’ll “win” at the bar.
Price: $1.99 (Special, “Season Opener” Price)![]()
