Ever needed an excuse to get out of a meeting, boring training session, bad date, or Southwest Airlines commercial? Have you ever asked a friend to call you during an engagement so you could excuse yourself without a lot of fuss? Fake-A-Call is that friend, except you don’t have to buy it a beer later.

Simply launch Fake-A-Call, set the time you wish to be “called,” and then prepare whatever outlandish, diabolical lie you plan to tell after your phone rings. (Note: In a pinch, “I’ll be right there!” followed by a mad dash from the room is quite effective if not a bit intriguing.)

The application may be set to call you at a preset time, in a specified number of minutes, or immediately. Options include enabling or disabling vibration, setting the caller number or name and subheading, and choosing a background photo. Of course you can set the ringtone as well, however custom ringtones are not supported.

Pros: A nice interface and decent realism. Plenty of options for setting your chosen time of interruption makes for a convincing “important phone call.” Overall a well executed app.

Cons: You will need time for the setup if you want to make it look like a real person is calling you, and people with intimate knowledge of your affairs may not be fooled. Also be careful because, while the screen goes to black during the countdown, it does not dim completely — an observant mark may spot this and the jig will be up.

Conclusions: Probably worth the money if it saves you even once. Try not to store the app within the first two pages of your phone, lets you be discovered and called out for the hoaxer that you are.

I give this app 4 out of 5 Fake Calls
